North Yorkshire Wedding Photographer

North-Yorkshire-Wedding-Photographer-01

North Yorkshire Wedding Photographer is the title of a feature on Wedding Photography Select’s website featuring me, Simon Mark Whitten at Firehorse Photography.

Darius approached me a few weeks before the end of the year asking if I’d like to be featured and whether I’d like to submit a wedding and then with Christmas and New Year getting in the way, I almost forgot about it until it popped up on our Facebook business page just now.

The full article can be viewed here: Wedding Photography Select feature, so I won’t waffle anymore about it here!

Francesca & Joel’s DIY Wedding (Part 1)

DIY-Wedding-152

Hi Simon,

Thank you so SO much! These are incredible!! We love them!!!
Literally everyone we've shown has said "your photographer is amazing" - so there.
Thank you so much for helping us to remember the day in all its crazy glory
and enabling us to share it with people who couldn't make it. And those rain shots!

Francesca & Joel

What is a DIY wedding? Well Francesca & Joel’s personifies DIY in many areas. To the casual browser, it may appear no different to any other church & marquee wedding, but dig deeper and you would discover it was so much more than that.

At most weddings, everything is bought and brought in, – outsourced. Everything including; flowers, cake, catering, cars, etc, but Francesca & Joel did things slightly differently and ‘insourced’ pretty much everything other than the marquee and the caterers for the meal.

Folks traveled from all over the world to attend, but mainly from around the UK and Australia for this very laid back of days infusing that laid back Aussie style with some British tradition.
The fact that Joel works in the festival industry may have played more than a small part to the feel, vibe & styling.

So following on from the prep stage of the day, it was off to St Oswald’s church in Sowerby near Thirsk for the ceremony conducted by Joel’s father, David.

This was followed by a champagne, strawberry and macaron reception in the glorious sunshine outside church before moving on to Francesca’s mothers house, old mill and marquee.

Francesca & Joel’s Backyard Wedding (Part 2)

Backyard-Wedding-085

Following on from Part 1 of Francesca & Joel’s backyard wedding is this, Part 2. Two parts because it was so good with so much material a single post would not have done their day justice.

So what exactly is a ‘backyard wedding’ and how does it differ from a ‘DIY wedding’? Well it’s just terminology really. A wedding in the US or Australia with a large ‘home made’ rather than outsourced element is often called a ‘backyard’ wedding as it happens in a garden or field.

Francesca & Joel’s wedding was exactly that. Other than the marquee and the excellent caterers (Friends 4 Dinner) everything else such as the flowers, canapes, cake etc were all provided by group effort from various friends & family.

After a gloriously sunny start to the day, mid drinks reception, the heavens opened but fortunately the mill building provided cover and a gift to a photographer for the exclusive couple only shoot.

Suzie & Matt’s North Yorkshire Marquee Wedding

Suzie & Matt got married last week. If you were there, you will know this! Suzie & Matt’s North Yorkshire marquee wedding took place at St Mary’s in the village of Wath near Ripon.

The vicar was Tim who also conducted Cynthia & Richard’s wedding the Sunday previously, but completely different church.

It was a hot day. Not as hot as it’s been this last week, but pretty hot and complete with blue skies and fluffy white clouds which is what everyone hopes for with a marquee reception in the middle of a field!

Suzie wore Caroline Castigliano and the men, traditional morning suits with the bridesmaids Andrea and sister Jilly in cornflower blue.

The blue Rolls was courtesy of Keith Snowden Cars and florist Sheila Danby with marquee by Classic and catering by CWC. The band was Touch The Pearl and fabulous fireworks kindly and generously provided by a family friend.

Sophie & Ollie’s West Yorkshire Marquee Wedding, Part 01

Last week was a busy week. The busiest week of the year for weddings with 3, this being the final one.

I shoot more marquee weddings than any other type of wedding or venue so Sophie & Ollie’s West Yorkshire marquee wedding was another typical day in the office for me…and it’s a great office to work in!

Sophie & Ollie’s wedding came about as a result of a wedding I photographed last year for Louise & Christian with Christian’s parents being Ollie’s god-parents.
I don’t know if that makes Ollie & Christian god-brothers, or something…

So it was another gloriously sunny day in a field on top of a grassy hill in West Yorkshire, unlike our pre-wedding photo-shoot where it did nothing but rain.

Sophie wore Pronovias sourced from the Bond Street shop in London and the groom Ollie, traditional morning suit and the 6 adult bridesmaids were dressed in grey.

Flowers were by Tracy at The Butterfly Net and the car, a cream MGB by Sophie’s dad, John.

The ceremony at St John The Evangelist in Upper Denby was conducted by the very accommodating Rev. Jeff and during the ceremony, Sophie’s sister Frankie sang ‘Grow Old With Me’ by Tom O’Dell.

Part 02 of Sophie & Ollie’s wedding continues here with the reception.

Sophie & Ollie’s West Yorkshire Marquee Wedding, Part 02

Continuing on from Part 01 of Sophie & Ollie’s West Yorkshire marquee wedding that took place on Saturday the 9th Aug in the village of Upper Denby, is Part 02, the reception.

This took place in a hilltop field with extensive views of the beautiful West Yorkshire countryside and just a short stroll from the church.

After a few family pics back at Sophie’s parents, the B&G arrived in Sophie’s father’s open top cream MGB for the champagne reception.
Might have technically been a Prosecco reception as these things should generally be called these days!

The catering was supplied by ‘The 3 Acres‘, a nearby local landmark restaurant with strong family connections (it’s owned and run by the groom’s god-parents) and instead of a cake cake, the couple had a stack of cheeses ‘cake’.

The evening entertainment was provided by wedding band The Juke Boxers and the couple are honeymooning/honeymooned in Tanzania and Zanzibar.

Papakata Marquee Wedding: Sophia & Christopher Part 01

If you have reached this page via the Journal link, you will have been informed that the sun shone.

The temperature gauge on my car was rising by half a degree every 5 minutes on the fairly brief drive to the other side of Thirsk and Baldersby St James for the Papakata marquee wedding of Sophia & Christopher.

It topped out at 28 degrees C by lunchtime so probably climbed higher but never actually felt too hot.

The first thing though was cake. Specifically Toy Story chocolate cake. And ginger beer.
It was Xan, the bride’s brothers birthday the previous day and I was invited to join the family for the end of their lunch.
(Top tip, – make your photographer part of your wedding day and you get better wedding pics. Feed them chocolate cake and ginger beer, you get their best!)

Sophia wore a Charlie Brear wedding dress from The White Closet, Didsbury and was attended by her 2 bridesmaids, Nicola & Imogen in cream with floral headpieces by one of my very favourite florists, Lucy MacNicoll.

The ceremony in St. James’s church was conducted by Suzanne Jukes and followed by a garden party reception and Papakata marquee next door in the Old Parsonage grounds, the home of Sophia’s grandparents, more of which in Part 02 of this post.

Papakata Wedding, Sophia & Christopher, Part 02

Continuing on from Part 01 of Sophia & Christopher’s Papakata wedding is Part 02, the reception.

The garden party style reception was held in the beautiful & unique location of Sophia’s grandparents grounds of their house, the Old Parsonage in Baldersby St James, between Thirsk & Ripon in North Yorkshire.

Although the temperature was quite hot, there was plenty of shade within the garden and the heat never became overwhelmingly so.

Canapes and drinks were served on the lawn followed by the 3 course wedding breakfast & speeches in the Papakata teepee style tent with catering by the ever excellent Yorkshire Party Company who I work with on several weddings every year.

The evening entertainment was by ceiligh band Coila all the way from Ayrshire in Scotland with dancing late into the night.

Cake was by Bettys of Harrogate and a Yorkshire institution!

The couple will be honeymooning in New Zealand in the new year due to Army Captain Christopher’s commitments.
